found on phasebook, 1967 Gold Cup cover, Edmonton
I suppose I should figure out how to link everything to and from phasebook. Maybe I'll let the dust settle on that show before putting in too much work.

to the winner
August used to be the traditional time for the Gold Cup to be run in Edmonton.
This year it was held on July 12th, and won by Brock Lemley from Bellingham, WA. It's now a dirt race and not held on the pavement.
All sorts of traditions end. And new ones begin.
Reminds me, the Daffodil Cup at Western Speedway is happening August 16th. That used to be held on the Labour Day weekend. And it was a two day event. Traditions end, traditions start.
Has kissing the trophy girl remained a constant?
1968 winner Jim Roberts passed away earlier this year which was noted on this blog.

Westwind Speedway, Edmonton, AB
Westwind Speedway 1969:

Westwind Speedway ad: 1969

Don't know much about this speedway. Seems to have inherited Speedway Park's drivers, races, etc., even though there was an overlap in operating years.
Allen Brown's History of America's Speedways has it running from 1969 to 1977 but those dates aren't solid.
What little looking I've done in the microfilm comes up with some super modified races. An ad from 1969 that appeared right after the 200- lap Gold Cup CAMRA race at Speedway Park. The 50 lapper at Westwind was won by Tom Sneva (the Gold Cup was won by Norm Ellefson).
The photo is from 1975: the Gold Cup was being contested at Westwind Speedway by then. Two 100-lap main events were scheduled. Salt Lake City's Bobby Baker was the overall winner.
As with most things, more research is needed.
