Kaija Kalevala and CKNW
A couple pages from the CKNW magazine, back around 1953. Kaija Kalevala was the "sweetheart of the speedway" back then.

some recent microfilm morgue finds
Haven't done this for a couple weeks. And I have tried to get to the "morgue" for more information.
Lee Kelly, whose columns from the Burnaby Examiner, have been reproduced here moved to the Columbian newspaper in March 1967. He was the sales manager for Black Motors in Burnaby and had a great number of contacts in the local motorsport world.
Not sure when Kelly left the Columbian but he wasn't back for 1968. Anyone know where he went? And if he continued to cover motorsport in his new location?
One item from 1967 was a test crash at Westwood. Lloyd Saunders escaped with some breaks and bruises after losing control on the wet track.
An ambulance was on hand, as per safety requirements, so he was transported to Royal Columbian Hospital after being freed from the car. The accident occurred between the esses and the bridge that crossed the track just past the pits and starting line.
He was preparing for the season opener a week later.
The photo comes from Barry Youngston. His father, Tommy, won a mechanic's award from the BC Stock Car Association at their annual banquet in the early 1950s. Pictured with him is radio broadcaster Jim Cox.
