a 1930 IMCA race from Winnipeg

Some new race results from the IMCA. It comes in these days in dribs and drabs but it still is coming in.

A new track, the 3/4 mile Polo Park, I'd not heard of. I will have to chase down the Winnipeg Free Press from that era next trip to the microfilm morgue.

Regina's Emory Collins, 1927 at Toronto

A description of Emory Collins giving a ride to a "society" editor at Toronto. (I deleted a photo of some society people that had nothing to do with the story.)

Emory Collins item from 1962

This google online newspaper archive is taking up a lot of my time.

The "local boy done good" was still making the Regina newspaper in 1962.

The top photo is from a McLaren site. I know I have photos of Emory to scan. I just have to find them....

the old outlaw circuit

The World of Outlaws drivers were at Skagit over the weekend. From close to 50 years ago here's a clipping of the IMCA, often referred to as being outlaws by the AAA and then USAC way back when.

Emory Collins was still the big draw in the Canadian swing, having grown up in Regina and having one of the more powerful cars.

From Lethbridge, 1950.

imca, 1923 part two

I like the photo from the Toronto Star. There was a big article in the magazine Auto Racing Memories by former IMCA stalwart Aut Swenson who traveled with the group back in those days and eventually had a thrill show that came through the prairies during the 1950s and beyond that talks about the train coaches that were attached to the fair train by Sloan that went from town to town. I'll have to search that one out.

The further exploits of Emory Collins, Regina, SK, come to light. First as a "mallet welder (sic)" for the automobile polo match that was part of the show and then in Ontario as a driver.

Looks like a two parter, maybe three. Some of the names aren't all that well known, but they are colourful -- Robin Hood?

And a photo to close out this rapid post from the Winnipeg Free Press of "E. Collins" and his win.

arrived in the mail today

A couple interesting motorsport items with Canadian connections.

First, John Cordts' short book Blood, Sweat and Turnips.

Second, The Alternate is the beginning installment on The Emory Collins Story, as told to Earl Fabritz.

Haven't read much of either yet so I can't comment. But both hold subjects are of interest to me. Cordts from a photo way back when at a rainy Laguna Seca where he won a Can-Am race. And Emory Collins because of his growing up in Regina, SK, and his racing beginnings from there.

April 1st -- Well, that above paragraph was wrong. John Cannon won the Can-Am race back in 1968 at Laguna Seca. Not sure at the moment if Cannon ever raced at Westwood. John Cordts did as far as I know. And Cordts did race Can-Am during its heyday.

And this is no April Fool joke.
