some old midget photos circa 1947

From negatives that were rediscovered in the pile of things needing rediscovery. Allen Heath and Louie Sherman at Aurora (Seattle), circa 1947.

two more old midget racers from the northwest

Louie Sherman and Allen Heath.

Louie with an outboard powered midget (I love his helmet design -- thumbing his nose) and Allen Heath circa 1940 at Seattle's Playland.

Allen Heath, 1918-1981

Just remembering the late great Allen Heath, born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, January 3, 1918. A cover story from Speed Age in 1955. If the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame was looking for colourful history, this is a guy who fits that bill.

Allen Heath bio, 1964, part three

Final installment to the Allen Heath story up to the beginning of the 1964 season. He would race a couple more years, after his recovery from losing his hand. I know there's a video of him running at El Centro in a CRA race whipping the tail of his sprint car with his good hand while broadsliding off the turn holding the wheel with his hook.

Allen Heath bio, 1964, part two

Heath heads south to race in California. Then to the midwest to run big cars. And almost loses his life.

Allen Heath bio from 1964, part one

Born in Saskatoon, learned his racing in the Pacific northwest. Even raced up here at Con Jones Park (now Callister Park) in the midgets. Heckuva story.

some more Allen Heath

More photos of Allen. These are midget shots from the Pacific northwest, mainly Aurora Stadium Speedway north of Seattle. Allen also raced at Langford Speedway, Con Jones Speedway and Cloverdale fairgrounds. The flagger is Glen Shaw with the Gilmore Lion checkered flag.

The midget was a Kurtis, owned by Tom Carstens, also known for his power boat and sports car exploits.

Allen Heath

Been going through computer files and see I've got some leftovers from previous posts. So, to begin with, Allen Heath. A legend. The top photo connects with Pike Green's story about Allen getting "some air" at Portland back in 1947. Below is an old business card for a shop Allen had in southern California. Allen won races down there from the 1940s to the 1960s in both midgets and sprint cars.

another Pike story, this time on Allen Heath

There are many Allen Heath stories. Pike Green wrote about Allan in the September 26, 1973 issue of Racing Wheels.

There will be more Heath stories to come.

(Sorry for being slow. Watched the Daytona Duels today having taped them on Thursday. Have to be up to date for the race later on.)
