Ralph Oakes, karter

While sitting in the waiting room of my doctor's office I noticed the cover story on 65 year old karter Ralph Oakes. Recognized the name from the 1960s.

He's still racing and good for him. Maybe I should do something like that. Might keep me out of the doctor's office.

Tach Times

Got Volume One, Number 4, November 1971 from John Randall. It's a folded tabloid style newspaper. Not sure how long it lasted. Came out of Lake Oswego, Oregon.

There were so many of these short lived papers. I'd like to find them all.

Try again, not that Rebel, this Rebel.

Interesting story on Rebel Jackson, ahem, Rebel Selley.

1972 IDC, open wheel

Been given a bunch of old Racing Wheels so I'm scanning like crazy. I like the "super modifieds and caged sprints" description. A few years earlier sprint cars weren't caged but by 1972 they pretty much were.

Seven races in nine days. Off days to get on and off of Vancouver Island.

Results:

Spanaway, Bill Deschamps
Portland, Ken Hamilton
Nanaimo, Don McLeod
Western, J.P. Standley
Skagit, Bill Deschamps
Langley, Bob Seelman
Tenino, Fontes/McLeod

Top Ten:

Bill Deschamps
J.P. Standley
Ed Hopper
Don McLeod
Bob Gregg
George Robertson
J.R. Standley
Palmer Crowell
Dave Bowling
Don Hein

(I believe this is my 1250th post. Good grief!)

some 1950s Digney ads

Jack Cullen (not "Cullin") was the big deejay back then. I did get a message from him a few years back about Digney Speedway. Seems like he thought it was fun times and a good era.

This final race was rained out. Results were hard to come by even when it didn't rain.

Roy Shadbolt

I know, been a few days. Lose momentum, have to kick it in gear.

Again.

Here's a Roy Shadbolt story from 1950. He was off to Pikes Peak for the hill climb. Or, at least, that was the hope.

pari-mutuel betting on auto racing

Not only were these races held during World War Two in Regina, but they also featured betting.

Indoor motorcycle races at Cloverdale

I think I've posted stuff from Cloverdale and the indoor motorcycle races before. But this one features Dayton MacKenzie.

Maybe they all do.

It's from January, 1968.

Thunder Mountain Raceway, part three

The hazard of digital cameras. Lots of photos.

My nephew was supposed to race but he broke his axle before I showed up. The close-up photo of the engine with a hole in it isn't my nephew's. But the clean-up from it leaving a trail of oil down the upper part of the track was slow (it's an all volunteer track) so that was it for me.

Some more photos from Thunder Mountain. Interesting collection of cars.

Thunder Mountain Raceway

Spent a few hours at Thunder Mountain Raceway, an 1/8th mile IHRA sanctioned drag strip about 40 kilometers southeast of Kelowna.
