Lloyd Ruby

Lloyd Ruby passed away recently. Here's an obituary.

Lloyd won a few big races over the years despite not winning the coveted Indianapolis 500.

Here's a couple links to videos of the Northwest Grand Prix held at Pacific Raceways. Heat one and heat two.

I don't believe he ever made it up to Westwood.

UBC rally, non-political

Those university students, always protesting something. Unless they're getting drunk or looking for sex. From 1969, when, much of the time, rallies weren't thought of as being about cars.

nonsensical returnings

Been off with a cold, etc., for the past while. Luckily had some stuff in the can so it didn't totally look like I'd run off with the loot.

Here's a piece of fiction from www.pulpgen.com, by a writer going with the name Phillip St. John. Apparently it's really the science fiction writer Lester Del Ray. The story is from 1949 entitled Hell On Dirt Oval.

And a poster taken from the Hairy Green Eyeball blog, comics and stuff.

Westwood Wednesdays, one

Going to try to put a clipping up for every year of racing. This might get tough in the later years as I haven't researched any of the local papers so I don't know if they cared.

But I'll start when they cared. And I won't start with the first race, although the 50th anniversary of Westwood's opening is being celebrated this July at Mission Raceway Park. See the links over on the right for much much more info on that.

So 1959:

racing novels, part 15

Saturday is a time to search for books and read books, especially when the weather isn't cooperating for racing.

grandview bowl, part ten

And the final points for the 1966 Inter-City series that ran ten feature events at Grandview Bowl in Nanaimo. For 1967 the series would run all three tracks -- Langley, Western and Grandview -- as the differences between the clubs and owners at Langley and Western had been resolved.

So I guess that means we're going to be doing 1967 Langley next. 100 years of confederation, everybody sing together!

early vancouver racing, final installment (for now)

Three motorcycle events from 1931. One a race from New Westminster to Blaine and back.

The next a hill climb in Maillardville.

And the third a motorcycle jamboree at Hastings Park held by the Greater Vancouver Motorcycle Club, a very old club still in existence.

There are power boat races that I've missed and will have to get back to.

Clarence Eckert collection

I recently scanned some photos I've had for a while. Stuff Don Radbruch sent to me. First one is Mario Bianchi at Silver Lake Speedway, near Everett, WA, August 1934. More to come.

Jim Clark in Vancouver

A few big time (during their time) racers came through Vancouver, if not to race, then at least to promote racing. Jim Clark came through in October 1965.
