some early racing from the Oregonian

Found a reasonable source for the Oregonian newspaper. Wish it went much further in years but I'm still mining what it has to offer.

From 1912, the first day of a two-day meet.

Saturday morning drums

Well respected session drummer from the past, Hal Blaine, had a racing instrumental album.

This tune, entirely drums with engine accompaniment, is called "Drum Brakes". A musical break with drums? Geddit?

an old midget car race, rained out

From the same year as yesterday. This time a midget race that ultimately was rained out. A photo of a front drive Offy to be driven by Darmond Moore is interesting.

an old big car race in Oregon

From 1946. Not a great event from the sounds of it. But a race nonetheless. Won by Howard Osborn.

a couple photos of the Romano Special of Seattle

Something to tide me over for a day. There are more photos of the Romano Special to be had from the Oregon Newspaper archive. I just have to get them organized. Which is why I need a day.

The car made it to Vancouver over those early years.

Sunday funnies

Doug Wright was featured on the pages of the Weekend Magazine insert of daily newspapers across Canada. The Vancouver Sun had it with the Saturday paper.

Doug is best known for his "Little Nipper" comic strip which is now being republished. But he also did other illustrative work. Apparently he was a fan of motorsport.
