1959 karts at False Creek Speedway

The quarter-mile oval (or a portion of it) was used for karting in 1959.

The Anderton name goes back to the early 1950s at Digney Speedway.

A Morgan and a Corvette, 1958

One Corvette available at Dueck's on Broadway. And a Morgan review.

I get to overhear things...

Mostly I get to hear I don't know things. Or I don't have them correct.

Take the last weekend at the Tradex. There's a panel I bring out that includes some information about Abbotsford Airport. It's sports car oriented, not drag racing. And it says "1950 to 1958".

A guy I recognize from the old drag racing club comments to his friend that 1958 is wrong. I guess I could have got all up in his face but I suppose drag racing did end at Abbotsford in 1957.

I guess the customer is always right. He just didn't buy anything. Harumph!

Ray Peets, in Spokane, 1956

Big season ending race south of Alberta in Spokane. Ray Peets made the trip. He didn't win but he was up there until he had problems near the end of the race.

Stan Reynolds

Stan Reynolds passed away earlier this year. He was 88. He raced Model Ts back in the 1940s. But one thing he was known for was his museum, the Reynolds-Wetaskiwin Museum. This 1957 article introduces him to Canada.

Gary Beck (and Ray Peets)

A big 1974 story for one of those weekend extra magazines that came with the daily newspaper.

Gary Beck (and Ray Peets)

Ray Peets and Eldon Rasmussen are part of the promotion.
One thing always leads to another. And I can't remember how I got to Gary Beck, but that always makes me think of Ray Peets, his mechanic from the mid-1970s. Peets ran stocks and modifieds in the 1950s and 1960s out of Edmonton.

Peets finished sixth in points for the 1965 Matan Memorial race.

Haney racers at Grandview Bowl

Wild looking crash. Former Digney Speedway flagman, and then flagger for Haney and then at Grandview Bowl in Nanaimo, Groffe Murdoch, checks out Harold Sjostrom's modified hung up in the fence.

some more about Haney 1964

The BCTRA boycotted Haney Speedway. And they started racing elsewhere. Nanaimo's Grandview Bowl for instance.

Mel Keen and others from Haney race on the Island.

Things fell apart at Haney Speedway in 1964. Some explanations about what happened.

1960, I think, Westbank hill climb

This is from volume 2, number 3, of the Canada Track & Traffic magazine archive. Okay I just checked, that's November, 1960, so that makes this report from the 1960 hill climb.

some more Langley Speedway shots from 1968

A Ralph Monhay mug shot. And Ralph on the left of a line up of CAMRA super modifieds circa 1967.

some more Langley Speedway program photos

A couple more photos scanned from this 1968 program I scavenged from the speedway back in the day. Other kids were doing the same and you had to be quick and also avoid the ones smeared with ketchup.

Actually I think this is a CAMRA event photo, probably from 1967.

Jack Cross. Dig his driving suit. T-shirt, probably white pants as that was required.

two CAMRA competitors

Scanned a couple pictures from a 1968 Langley Speedway program. Top photo is Walt Laughlin, of Boise, ID, in the old Malloy roadster and the bottom driver is Chuck Neitzel from Boise, ID. Looks like both photos were taken at Langley Speedway.

Abbotsford events

What with the Tradex show coming up in less than two weeks Abbotsford has been on my mind. That might be obvious from the recent posts. Here's a couple more from the 1950s.

easter 1973

I didn't get out to find the parade. From what the web showed the one to Steveston from Oakridge was canceled but the Hyack parade to Queen's Park was still on.

And there hasn't been a be-in for a lot of years. Never made it to one of those either. I see Sgt. Bernie Smith was there in 1973. And he was handing out flowers to the flower children.
