Here's some recent footage of Ralph Monhay running his restored modified at Stateline Speedway in Idaho.

when in doubt, link...

I'm not too "hip" to facebook and all that, but here's an interesting facebook page from the Idaho Historical Racing Society.

I even see a photo of Jerry Day (get well Jerry!) that was on the pages of a local racing newspaper that Jim Greenwood published back in 1969.

internet searches, part three

And yet more from Spokane. Seems like, in the late 1920s, cross country air races were all the rage and took up more space in the newspaper. But there was auto races as part of the annual fair as well.

internet searches, part two

Some more from the early years at Spokane.

internet searches

With Google putting up some newspaper microfilm for all to search I've been going back to find what I can find. Here's somethings from Spokane in 1936, early midget racing. I believe the "Dabbs" listed here as a winner is actually "Dans". Adolph Dans (or Danz) raced quite a bit in the 1930s.

Saturday video: Twig Zeigler's nostalgia funny car

Another video from the April Abbotsford's Tradex show. This one of Twig Zeigler, up from Oregon, and his nostalgia funny car. Hopefully Twig will be up at Mission with his funny car again this summer.

a look at 1970, part twenty

To end out the year, sadly, a death of one of the real Pioneers of Vancouver motorsport: Arleigh Pilkey. He's been mentioned here in other posts. Check out his accomplishments here. No doubt I'll be adding to these as Arleigh really did help create the racing scene in Vancouver.

A couple Vancouver based sports car drivers made it south to the American Road Race of Champions.

a look at 1970, part eighteen

Moving forward to September. Interesting, and probably "one-off", motorcycle hill climb in West Vancouver. I have also seen a mention of motorcycle trials held at Hollyburn Mountain (now part of the Cypress Bowl ski area) up above West Van.

a look at 1970, part seventeen

A mixed bag weekend from August 1970. Drag, oval and hydroplane racing.

a look at 1970, part sixteen

Don't know much about this form of motorcycle racing. A Vancouver rider made it to the national team. That's interesting. (There was a Jack Funnell from Vancouver who raced midgets back around 1950. Related?)

Saturday video: Eagle Electric top fueler at the Tradex

Second year for this Spokane based fueler at Abbotsford's Tradex. Good history to the car.

a look at 1970, part fifteen

Tom Sneva raced at Langley Speedway a couple times in 1970. The future Indianapolis 500 winner did well at Langley with the rear-engined supermodified.

a look at 1970, part thirteen

1970 racing continues with a feature story on the racing in the Sun's Leisure section. And a great cover illustration by Roy Peterson.

Continuing with 1970, Hershell McGriff comes north and Gordie Hemrich has an opinion on the style of racing that comes with Hershell.

Saturday video: Jason McVicar's Bonneville crash

Jason McVicar gave a short talk last October at the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneers ceremony. He mostly talked about Bonneville and the good things. The best thing probably came out of what could have been the worst thing for him: he survived a fall and slide off his motorcycle at nearly 400 kmh.
